Fussy eaters 101

What can we say about fussy eaters?

A lot! I have 3 fussy eaters in my family and it makes dinners a nightmare especially with the younger kids, from only eating cooked tomato to green peppers are yuck! If you get a fussy eater it can be frustrating to get them to eat properly every day.

A toddler picky eater will use food as a way to assert themselves. It is a natural stage of developing independence. In a toddler’s case it is important to give the child a variety of foods. The older children get, the less likely they will be willing to try new foods.

Let’s dive into how to get picky eaters to have healthy meals.

  • If you give an assortment of foods to the toddler, they will be more likely to eat at least a few.

  • Introduce new food with the regular food the child already eats

  • When introducing new foods keep to small quantities

  • If the toddler or child doesn’t want to eat a specific food don’t force it

  • Make dishes attractive and colourful

  • Keep offering the food so that the child gets used to it

  • Children change their taste in food

  • Be the example, eat the food yourself

With small children make a big fuss about eating the food and praise them when they try something new

  • Try offering with a sauce or a dip

  • Put the food they don’t eat in a wrap or sandwich

  • Let them prepare food with you!

  • Give different foods in a cupcake tray

Fussy foods to try

  • Pomegranate- they love the colour

  • Tomato soup (recipe below)

  • Crispy but cooked broccoli (little trees)

  • Fruit salad with whipped cream or honey

The main focus is don’t give up! Have fun trying these tips and different foods.
